Mixed Reality Becomes "Reality" In A School Library
15th of July 2008
Once again, Mixed Reality becomes "reality" in a school library. Recently, at the request of Maris Stella High School (Primary), MXR Corporation set up an entire Mixed Reality classroom in the school's library. Students will now experience a whole new dimension in classic storytelling with MXR's powerful, cutting-edge Mixed Reality.
With MXR's current fifteen stories, available in both English and Chinese , students can read, play, and interact with the story characters as well as read (non-interactive) paper books.
Mixed Reality, also known as "augmented reality", typically uses a webcam and a computer, allowing users - with physical "markers" such as printed cards or cubes - to control animated virtual objects that are visible in the "real" world on the computer monitor. The animated virtual objects that the user manipulates in Mixed Reality can be programmed to interact with each other or the user's "real" environment. Mixed Reality thus provides a powerful and cost-effective medium for education, industry and entertainment.
However, with these powerful, interactive "storybooks" soon there may be another challenge for the teachers at Maris Stella, how to get the kids out of the library when it closes.

A picture tells "A Thousand Words" in MOE ExCEL Fest 2008
|
4th-5th of July 2008
Infusing the demonstration space with creativity and interactivity, MXR Corporation and CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity attracted hundreds of visitors to their booth at the MOE ExCEL Fest 2008 that took place on the 4th and 5th of July at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Center.
With creative stories written by students from CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity, they challenged the traditional "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" story and gave the story a new take, naming it "The Baby Bear and the Locks". The art of storytelling itself was relooked into by using Mixed Reality technology. For the first time, readers of the book could interact with the story like never before; where users let the baby bear chase after a fork that is controlled by the user using a tangible card, or users can move cubes to control the temperature of the water for baby bear's bathtub.
Many teachers and students were fascinated and curious with the Mixed Reality technology and appreciated the various ways the technology can be applied to different areas of teaching and learning. The crowd surely marveled at the novel experience they had had at our booth.
MXR's next step is to invite local schools to join the Mixed Reality Education Consortium that we recently set up to create a whole spectrum of Mixed Reality contents in different subjects. For more information about this World's 1st Mixed Reality consortium that will be supported by Media Development Authority (MDA) of Singapore, click here.

News and Notes: 16 June 2008
Journey into the digital future with BroadcastAsia
2008
Largest-ever Singapore Pavilion will
anchor the event, showcasing cutting-edge technologies that will change
how we use and interact with media.
BroadcastAsia is back, and this 13th instalment of
the region's premier digital multimedia technology event promises a
glimpse into the digital future.
Themed "Digital: The Journey Forward", BroadcastAsia2008 -
which opens tomorrow - will cover 22,000 sq m of the Singapore Expo, with
760 companies from 46 countries taking part.
Its anchor group pavilion will be the 1,200 sq m Singapore
Pavilion, showcasing a record 50 local companies on the cutting edge of
digital broadcasting. This compares with just 180 sq m and 10 local firms
in 2004.
"The pavilion captures MDA's vision to grow a vibrant
media hub, and create a conducive environment for the test-bedding of
innovative applications, services and technologies," said Dr Christopher
Chia, CEO, Media Development Authority of Singapore. "We also aim to
attract more broadcasters and industry players to use Singapore as a
launch pad to regionalise their businesses."

With pre-registered visitors admitting sourcing budgets of
US$1.8 billion, this target looks achievable.
What's in store? Here are a few highlights of the
Singapore Pavilion.
- Technology
group PGK, together with UzoneMedia, will showcase their mobile media
distribution platform for public transportation. The solution lets
passengers find their entertainment and food options in their vicinity,
and will be rolled out in about 1,000 taxis in Singapore in a few
months' time.
- MXR Corporation, formed in 2004, is a pioneer in "mixed
reality" or "augmented reality". With a computer and a web cam, users
can interact with the world on the screen by manipulating physical
markers on cards or cubes. So, for example, children from as young as
three years can change how a fairytale is being told on a computer,
simply by manipulating cubes in front of the webcam.

-
Broadband infrastructure and technology company
Qmax Communications is exhibiting inPerson, which supports multi-party
conferencing. Unlike Skype or MSN, the unit, which works with wi-fi or
LAN connection, offers enterprise-quality sound and images.
-
The world's first location-specific mobile
television network will also be presented at the Singapore Pavilion.
PICO DVB-H Basestation, by Innoxius Technologies, is one of the smallest
self-contained DVB-H headends in the world, but facilitates mobile
television in a building, for example. Working through broadband IP
infrastructure, the content can be fed on-site, either by operators or
users.
BroadcastAsia 2008 runs from 17 to 20 June at Singapore
Expo and is open to trade visitors. It is held alongside CG Overdrive - Asia's unparalleled computer-graphics
event - and a host of other events under the Infocomm Media Business Exchange.
During this week, MDA will also be organising the
first-ever Regional Seminar on Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting
(DTTB). Comprising workshops and presentations, the event aims to provide
technical and policy training to support the efforts of Asean countries in
the adoption of a common digital TV broadcasting standard.
We will be bringing you highlights of BroadcastAsia 2008,
CG Overdrive and the Regional Seminar on DTTB throughout this coming week.
Stay tuned!

Mixed Reality - For A Greener World! - Another permanent exhibition at Singapore Science Center
16th of May 2008
As the world climate changes for the worse, many are still unsure on how they can play a part in making our world a better place to live in. Luckily the Science Centre, Singapore and MXR Corporation have partnered once again to launch a climate change platform named "Over the Horizon"
Students look on as Dr. Steven Zhou conducts a demostration on how to use the platform.
The platform utilizes a new platform by MXR Corporation as part of its corporate products arsenal, named wIzCardsTM. Essentially a card or brochure, it allows the user to manipulate a virtual object as though it is really on the card or brochure itself. The user can also interact with the virtual object just by prodding it with a finger.
The game allows the user a bird’s eye view of a city which they have created by placing "building"; cards onto a map on the table. The user is then faced with a number of challenges, especially in the area of powering up their city. Usage of too many refineries and coal power stations deliver massive power, but pollutes the environment. Solar cells and BioFuel is environment friendly, but lack the punch of their non environment friendly counterparts. This game is a constant battle for the balance between economy and environment, and it challenges the user to produce a city that is clean and green.

Dignitaries that visited the exhibit included the Minister for Environment and Water Resources Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim and the Chairman of the Singapore Science Centre, Mr. Wee Heng Tin. Both were equally impressed with the interactivity and graphical visualization of the platform. |

wIzQubes TM Arrives At CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity
17-18th of April 2008
CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity has just received their first two units of wIzQubesTM and they are an instant hit with the children. Assisting the school
with the design of the overall scheme and mascot is Marketing Manager for MXR Corporation, Mr. Daniel Lee.
CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity also organized a short familiarization course for the children,
which resulted in waves of children all over the wIzQubesTM
KioskTM . Once the story started, the children reduced silence as their
favorite storybook characters came into life in their little hands.

Many of the students commented that wIzQubesTM was a breeze to interact with, largely because they have seen it before, being exhibited at the Singapore Science Centre's iSpace.
A simple flip, turn and bring together moves the story along and the children can now view the story in full vivid 3D and just about any camera angle they like.
MXR Corporation currently has plans to develop a consortium of Interactive Mixed Reality schools in Singapore, using Mixed Reality in the enhancement of education for the future. For interested parties,

New concentration span record on wIzQubesTM - 3.5 Hours
9 March, 2007
MXR wIzQubesTM attracted a lot of kids and parents, including this cute girl who is 8 years old. She spent over three and a half hours at the wIzQubesTM station, standing and playing stories again and again! Her favorite story was Cinderella. Our sales representative asked her why she didn't feel bore repeating the stories, she said, it is different every time. wIzQubesTM allow kids to view 3D stories from any angles. Therefore, the story shows differently every time depending on how the kids manipulate the cubes.
This, thus, had entered the longest recorded time on kids playing with wIzQubesTM . Our last record was from a 7 years old boy at Los Angeles , California , who spent two hours and ten minutes, sitting in front of a PC. His favorite story is the Three Little Pigs.
